Steel Electrical can replace your consumer unit to ensure it is safe and fully up to standard. We will do this efficiently, affordably and with as little disruption as possible to your day.
A consumer unit (commonly known as a fuseboard) is a distribution board on which all the electrical elements of a property come together. The board is made up of multiple switches, each of which relates to a circuit within your home or commercial building. Your lighting and power is controlled and supplied from here. If something goes wrong with a device, and the fuseboard detects an overflow current, the device will trip and cut power, keeping you safe.
If your consumer unit (fuseboard) has not been checked since before 2001, then it may not be up to standard. The British Standard BS 7671:2001 ‘Requirements for Electrical Installations’ and the 17th edition of the IET Wiring Regulations state that all new or replacement consumer units are to be fitted with residual current device (RCD) protection so that, if a fault occurs, the circuit breaker trips and stops the flow of electricity. RCD protection is essential for reducing the risk of accidents like electric shocks or electrical fires.
If your consumer unit is old and outdated, it will need to be replaced. It is now the law that outdoor electricity supplies and sockets must be covered by RCD protection, as well as any wiring that is embedded into your walls. The Steel Electrical team can quickly and efficiently replace your unit to ensure it meets BS 7671 and the 17th edition of the IET Wiring Regulations.
As well as replacing your consumer unit in line with Part P of the building regulations, we will provide you with an Electrical Installation Certificate for the work. A consumer unit replacement is classed as notifiable work under the building regulations, so we will also notify your local building control authority on your behalf once the project is complete. This will ensure that your electrical work complies with the necessary standards and guidelines.
